St Mary's Bell Refurbishment Project

St Mary’s has an active team of bell ringers, but the bell installation is now well over a hundred years old, and has a number of specific issues which need to be addressed.

The intention is to carry out the following work:

  • Replace the gudgeons and fit new ball bearings
  • Repair the wheels
  • Rebush and overhaul the clapper/staple assemblies
  • Forge weld a new top for the tenor clapper
  • Replace the pulley units
  • Fit new ash stays and sliders.

We request your help with a donation towards the cost of this refurbishment, which is expected to be around £30,000 in total.

Carrying out this work will ensure that the bells can continue to be rung for church services and special events throughout the next 100 years.

It will also make the bells easier to ring, which will help both existing ringers and new learners.

In the unlikely event that this work doesn’t go ahead then the money will remain in a restricted bell fund which will be used for a more limited refurbishment of the bells.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and any help you can give us to keep the bells ringing into the next century will be gratefully received.
