St Matthew's Mothers' Union
Tuesday 10th June 2024
As always, we began with our short act of worship led by Sue and a reading by Ann.
Our speaker for the evening was Lesley Walker, who although a poet, said she thought herself as a story teller. All her poems came about by unusual events she came across.
The first came from her class. She was teaching English to ‘O’ level students who had to wright poetry as part of the exam. They said, "if it is so easy Miss, why don't you write one?" So of course she had to. From then on she began to write more, and eventually she had the poems published in a book dedicated to The Dovedale Singers, a group she belongs to, who always laugh in the right places. The proceeds from the book go to Soroptimist International via their branch in Ashton-Under-Lyne.
She read many of her poems and told us the stories behind them. They were all very interesting, some thought provoking, but many very funny. I am sure she was a wonderful English teacher.
Mavis thanked her, on behalf of all the members, for a very interesting talk.
Our next meeting will be on the 9th July.
